What I’m thankful around Thanksgiving

This guest editorial, by Pam Fricke, appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on November 28, 2024.

My family has a Thanksgiving tradition; instead of a prayer, each guest shares with the gathering what he or she is most grateful for that year.

I’m thankful for my health, because without good health, nothing else matters. I also appreciate the fact that I have Medicare, affordable supplemental insurance, and good caregivers here in St. Croix County.

I’m thankful for my family and the respect and love we have for each other, despite differences of opinion, economic status, religious backgrounds, and sexual orientation.

I’m thankful for an ever-widening circle of friends who share my values. We’re concerned about the environment and the world we’re leaving our children.  We trust the doctors and scientists who protect our public health. We support our public education system and the teachers who work so hard for so little in return.

Finally,  I’m thankful to live in a country that still upholds democracy.  It might not always work out the way I want it, but there’s always a new election and the promise of hope.
