Vote NO for the Constitutional Amendment
This letter to the editor, by Jeff Gagen, appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on October 3, 2024.
On your ballot in November there is yet another proposed constitutional amendment deserving a NO vote.
As a person of conservative temperament, I view proposed constitutional amendments skeptically. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Our Wisconsin Constitution is far too easy to amend. All it requires is for the Legislature to pass a proposed amendment two sessions in a row. Given the stagnant nature of the makeup of our Legislature, this is a very low bar to clear. It’s left to us voters to be the check and balance.
Currently, our Wisconsin Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to vote. We already have laws that prohibit non-citizens from voting. This works and I like that. Changing this language, as the proposed constitutional amendment would do, could open the door to the Legislature further limiting our voting rights.
I urge everyone to vote NO on the proposed constitutional amendment.
