The Low Road

This letter to the editor, by Wesley Caine, appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on January 15, 2026.

America is taking the low road. For what purpose? President Donald Trump has convinced a segment of our country that we are losing status. He said we need to make America Great Again (for white males). Hence his appeal as an arrogant bully to those who are afraid to share their privileges with others. Forget the U.S. Constitution that declares all men are created equal. I understand the appeal. But I appeal to you that we need to be bigger than that. All men are created equal. Some have been born with advantages while others have not, but let us not forget that these advantages should not preclude our understanding that we need to help those who are not born with these privileges. They are our equals.

I can barely contain my outrage at the abuses of power that Trump has exhibited. This dictator we have, who does not even ask for forgiveness after not asking for permission, is the worst. Then there are our representatives who do nothing to curb these abuses. Who is then going to confront the bully?

Trump is good at attacking weak opponents. Just like the bully he is. Whether they be people who have not voted for him, disagreed with him, are just weaker than him or simply a country that he wishes to dominate. I wish he would put half of his vengeful energy into defending Ukraine. Note: He wants to take over Greenland for “national security” just like Russia President Vladimir Putin wants to take over Ukraine.

Trump is destroying America, which has set the standard for the rule of international law and justice. He is spitting on our allies. No country remains strong while belittling its neighbors. I implore my friends and neighbors to let their voices be heard. America alone against the world is not the path to take. Please don’t be silent. Thanks for reading. I hope I have given you something to think about.
