Hats Off to the DMV
This letter to the editor, by Pam Fricke, appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on May 7, 2026.
We see so much bad behavior these days — especially from many of our so-called leaders — that we’ve become accustomed to it. At least, I know I have. The all-too-common shouting, threats and violence make the world an ugly place. That’s why it’s so important we practice good behavior in our community. Being kind and respectful to one another improves both our mental and physical health, not to mention the lives of those with whom we interact.
I was expecting the worst when my husband and I visited the Hudson DMV to register our car and get plates. The line snaked out the door and posters in the outer and inner lobbies reminded customers not to abuse staff. I could not imagine how difficult it must be to work in a setting where management is compelled to put up such signs.
My worries were unfounded. Hats off to the Hudson DMV staff who handled the crowd efficiently, professionally and courteously. The staffers at the information desk and counter, who assisted us, answered our questions and helped with the more complicated paperwork. We made a point of thanking them for their extra attention.
And hats off to those customers waiting patiently in line, using the time to chat with a companion and look at their phones and understanding this was not an opportunity to take out one’s frustration on others. And when they finished their business at the counter, we heard many thank a DMV staffer.
What I witnessed reminded me that a bit of respect and kindness can warm up a chilly day.
