Ballot Measures with Negative Consequences

While the midterm election’s focus is on the candidates, voters in Wisconsin will need to be aware of three ballot measures that could have far-reaching consequences. One measure would create an amendment to prohibit closure of places of worship during emergencies, including public health emergencies.

You might recall that six short years ago, local and state governments banned large gatherings to slow the spread of COVID-19. This included places of worship.

Opponents argue that closing churches violated their First Amendment right to exercise their freedom to worship. Some churches offered online services; others encouraged members to practice safe distancing and pray at home.

Though I’m no Biblical scholar, my research on the web consistently points out that nowhere in the New Testament is there a stated requirement to attend church, weekly or otherwise. Moreover, if our state and local government has to make the difficult decision to ban large gatherings, remember that it is for your own good and that of our community. Vote no on this ballot measure, and vote no on the other two as well.
