Americans Want To Be Safe

This letter to the editor, by Sue Curtis, appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on March 6, 2025.

Americans want to feel secure as we go about our daily lives.  From sending our children safely to school to knowing that our water and food are free of toxic chemicals, we want to feel safe.

Terrorists, both external and internal, should not find it easy to attack us.  Our internet should be regulated with an eye to safeguarding our children and our privacy.  We need to know that we have allies, which we gain when we work with other countries to enhance their safety and freedom.  We can’t fight terrorism and injustice in the world all by ourselves.

We deserve protections on our private information, as well as our savings so we are safe from financial predators.

Americans want to trust that when they travel in a car, train, or plane, that the vehicle has passed inspections and that the roads, tracks, and airways are well kept.

We want well-trained, licensed healthcare providers who are held to a high standard, and equipped with an arsenal of tested, well-researched treatments for us when we get sick.  We want research to continue so there will be more, and more effective, treatments in the future.   It is hard enough to be sick, or to have a loved one be sick, without having to constantly beware that, in our vulnerable state, we are easy to be taken advantage of.

Without accurate weather information, we cannot prepare our families and our properties for severe weather, and we want timely assistance in the aftermath.

Lastly, we want to feel secure that sex traffickers and other criminals are caught and brought to justice through robust investigations and intelligence.

When regulations and the people and systems that support them are eliminated, America is less safe for you and your family.

Like home invaders, Presidents Trump and Musk are stealing our safety, security, and trust.  They and their supporters such as Congressmen Tom Tiffany and Derrick Van Orden,  want you to believe that they are creating a streamlined federal government when in reality they are gutting it and dismantling our safety nets so that billionaires can benefit.
