Accusations of Communism are Simply Scare Tactics
This letter to the editor, by John Krizek, appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on July 9, 2026.
The claim that Democrats want communism is not a political argument — it is a distraction. It is designed to frighten voters rather than inform them, and it deserves a direct, factual response.
The Democratic Party is home to three distinct mainstream ideological groups, and not one of them advocates for communism.
The largest group — Centrist Democrats — fully embraces market capitalism and private enterprise. They support free trade, public-private partnerships, and fiscal responsibility. Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden represent this tradition. These are not the politics of Marx; they are the politics of the American mainstream.
Social Democrats, the second group, accept capitalism entirely. They simply argue it must be regulated and paired with a strong safety net — universal healthcare, public education, and worker protections. This is the governing model of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway — some of the most prosperous, free, and stable democracies on Earth. No reasonable person calls Scandinavia communist.
Democratic Socialists, the smallest and most progressive group, do favor greater public ownership of key industries. But they pursue their goals through free elections and democratic institutions — the very opposite of authoritarian communism. Bernie Sanders has never advocated for a one-party state, the abolition of elections, or the elimination of private property.
Communism is a system of authoritarian, single-party rule that eliminates democratic elections, private property, and individual liberty. Democrats — all of them — operate within and actively defend America’s democratic system.
Voters deserve honest debate about real policy differences. Calling Democrats communists is not debate. It is a wornout scare tactic that insults the intelligence of every American voter.
