What Happens When We Fight

I was a delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris earned her official nomination for the presidency. Here are the enduring memories I came away with:

- Unity and Passing the Torch: The convention highlighted a unified front, with leaders emphasizing the seamless transition of leadership from President Joe Biden to Vice President Kamala Harris. The theme of unity was not just about the party but also about leading the nation forward during challenging times.

- Democracy and American Values: Democracy was a central focus, with Harris and other speakers stressing the importance of preserving democratic institutions. Harris framed her campaign as a fight to protect democracy, contrasting her vision with that of former President Donald Trump.

- Economic Equality and Social Justice: The convention emphasized economic justice, with calls to address income inequality, expand healthcare access and protect social safety nets. This was coupled with strong messages on diversity and inclusion, aiming to appeal to a broad coalition of voters.

- Foreign Policy and Global Leadership: Harris used the platform to outline her foreign policy stance, pledging continued support for Israel while also addressing the humanitarian concerns in Gaza. This dual focus was aimed at balancing domestic and international priorities while drawing contrasts with Trump’s foreign policy approach.

- Historic Candidacy and Inspiration: As the first Black woman to be nominated for president by a major party, Harris’s candidacy was celebrated as a historic moment. While this was acknowledged as a milestone, the focus was primarily on her qualifications and readiness to lead the nation.

The convention was filled with messages like: “When We Fight We Win” or “We’re Not Going Back” or “For the People.” These messages in the speeches were not only heard — but felt. They went through our heart and proved we are a New Democratic Party driven by hope and joy. The most important message was when the glass ceiling breaks it is not just for women but for all of us. For our children, the young and old, for workers and the middle class.
